A's.

I like the British accent, well the poshy one and not the chavish accent, they speak so trashy lol. Although I like the American as well. And I can do both, which can be annoying - Bad habit (depends on whom I'm speaking with).
So I was just wondering - what accent do you have when you speak english ?
Posh? American? Tex. accent? Or whatever?

W's.

Moonlight skrev:It has happened before that people hear me speak English and shockingly ask me, "are you American? :o". So I assume my accent sounds American. I must admit though that in my head, when I speak English, I feel like/think that I sound like.... I do NOT like to speak English .

Haha, aww. I just like speaking English, but it depends on whom i'm speaking with. Just need to feel comfortable y'know?

Mostly I use American accent when I am with friends or when i am arguing with someone. It is a lot easier.

But in school and exams I use English accent. Mostly just to impress the teachers. And it workers :)

Well some teachers are, since the subject is called ENGLISH and not AMERICAN. But it depends, some do and some don't.
My english teacher has an american accent, and he doesn't really care about the accent, well not that I know of.

Both "languages" are English. I think one should distinguish between British English and American English.

I definitely prefer to speak British English, but when speaking with Americans it is hard for me to avoiding shifting to American English. And I hate my self for that!

Peace be upon you all

I guess that when I talk, then it´s mostly american mixed with other unknown accents, Allah (Subhana wa ta'ala) knows best :o . But sometimes I try to use the Scottish accent, it´s so much fun :o Like when William wallace (Mel Gibson) meets his old friend: "I wonder if you can do that in the battle?"
and his friend answers: "I can crush you like a woreem (worm)" hehe

Oh, I like australian too

British? No thanks! :o It just don´t fit in!

Salam Alaikum!

I LOVE the Irish accent, i think it's charming, LOL!

I don't have any particular accent myself, been living in the UK for 3 years. I think it's more of a mixture here.. Lets say a Sandinavian accent, although without the Danish r,
I work in a call centre and most customers are really facinated by my accent, which sometimes gets too much :?

 And then we have an offshore call centre in India, I swear they are hilarious, no offence, but gheee!! HAHAHA!!!

As-salamu 'alaikum,

In Denmark we are taught British English (BE) in school and in high school. At university level one can choose either BE or American English (AE) as most of you already know. However, most of the movies and shows (and popular music) shown on TV and heard in the radio in Denmark are American. These facts combined makes most of us speak a sort of hybrid English: Either we speak BE with a lot of AE vocabulary or we speak AE with a lot of BE vocabulary! :D

Personally I prefer speaking BE as it is easier for most Danes (or people who were taught English in Denmark) to sound like someone from Britain. However, I always have to be conscious about not using AE... I've been to England a few times and people generally thought I sounded British (a bit posh though) but I sometimes made a fool of myself, when using "pants" instead of "trousers" (in BE pants is mostly used for underwear) and "candy" instead of "sweets". :D

I have noticed that most young people from Denmark prefer to sound American but in my opinion they are rarely able to pull it off.

You're welcome!

Yes... that's a classic. Other examples are: "truck" instead of "lorry" and "bus" instead of "coach". :)

Gotta say, I can't stop laughing whenever I hear a Dane on TV go "I want a hotdogs" or "Lets have a drinks" :teeth:

I'm actually having a harder time understanding a Brit rather than a one talking English with an Indian accent :P

Ohh come on.. that is just mean.. You don't have to talk that way just because you use an American accent...(not the accent, but an accent.. why ? well simply because of the fact that there are more than 1 American accent) Besides, the example you gave has nothing to do with the accent. That is more about the lame way they construct a simple sentence (so yes I agree that it sounds very peculiar)

Well... I guess an American English accent can be charming but I still say most Danes sound ridicilous when they try to pass for Americans.

If I had to choose a version of AE it would be a slight Southern Drawl sort of like what Matthew McConaughey has going on... :D

I like English, Australian, Irish and Scottish accents better though...

I gotta say tht i like the american (AND the turkish  ) accent most. I agree with our brotha whn his sayin tht "I was like, and he was like, and we was like, and they was like, Oh My Goood, And then she was like What-evaaaaah" is too much. Yani they shudd talk more normal, but americans like to overreact whn they talk. gotta say tht british is awful. :o
