How do you learn best ?

Indlægby AbU » tors mar 30, 2006 22:52

Salam / Hi all..

I guess I could go for the very first thread here. :)

I was wondering, how you learn english best ? By talking ? By Writing? By Reading ? or maybe a combination of all parts ?
-Which one of these parts do you actually use the most ? ..
-What is the hardest part in learning english ?
-Do you use english other places than school? If yes, where?
-How much english do you use daily ?

It would be great if you could give your answers and opinions about these questions, and share them with the rest in here :P

Thanks .

Peace

Salam Aleikum..

I see your english is also inspired by the american street slang :D .
Am I correct? not that Its negative, not at all. I believe its a faster way to learn english, especially if you find english classes boring, you will automaticly learn english through the internet or tv/music.

Well, I think you just answered that question yourself, by writing slang :haha: .. It´s very cool though..

So how about when you are at exames ? Isn´t hard to change the style into normal decent brittish english ? I mean, maybe you suddenly forget that you are at an exame, and start to write ebonic :P

Wa 'alaykum as-salam

If it is easier for people to learn it that way, it sounds like a good idea mashaAllah. As long as everyone remembers that this slang should only be used in very casual situations. At school, the job etc. one should try to speak/write in a more proper way, either british or american english.

I guess it wouldn't be that smart starting an english exam by adressing the censor, what up dawg, and asking about the last time he chilled with his homies at the crib.

Khayr inshaAllah :D

Well you can actually learn english in many ways, but the ways you had mentioned is the most best. You had forgotten one, that is really good too. By lisining to english songs, that's the way I learned it.
I don't read a book for learning, but for the comfort sake. Heh I mean, I don't think in a way, that i read a book for learning english, but that comes to. I only write on english when it is homework hehe or when I write to my friends on english just for fun :D
What it is the heardest part to learn english? Well i don't know because it isn't the grammar. And it isn't also hard to pronunc the words. Don't think that there are something hard for me in learning english it is just about to remember ;) BUT of courset it is gonna take time for having the real english accent. That caounts in all launage.
Like i remanched before I talk english with my friends some times, other times with strange people when they ask me for something :D
Hmm not that much, sometimes I think on english hehe :D But it isn't a lagnuage i use. ONLY in school :) That's it.

As salamu alaykum

Well, I learned english as the first in my class. I remember once.. We were going to sing a song in 4. class, in english, and it was the first time. And then I had been sick for a few weeks, so i missed all the lessons where we sang this song..

When I got well again, and cam back to school, my teacher said: Okay, Just try to sing along, it must be hard for you when you haven't been here for so long, and then I said oKay..
And when we began to sing, I was the one who sang the best, and loudest! And thrust me.. My teacher was VERY impressed!!

Abu, When I was younger I learned english very good by watching soap-operas and other movies in english with danish subtitles. That way I could listen, and read the subtitles to understand.
Now, it is actually still the same.. I learn very much from watching movies..

Wa salaaam..

(Gal, det var dejligt og fĂĄ alt det ud pĂĄ engelsk!!:P)

Wa Alaykumu Assalam my brother from another mother :D

-Which one of these parts do you actually use the most ? ..

I am not sure. I think I learn most by reading.

-What is the hardest part in learning english ?

There is no hard part :D
Oh well, maybe learning the differences between british english and american english. Australian english sounds just dumb.

-Do you use english other places than school? If yes, where?

Of course I do. I speak it with my brother, my friends in other countries like England. I know a few who lives there. I also use it on a great forum called IslamiC.dk, it's simply great!
Oh yeah, and once in a while when I log on paltalk. Which is very seldom.

-How much english do you use daily ?

I'm not sure. Actually I don't remember any day where I haven't spoken english just a bit. I have always spoken english, once when I was a young child I played in english, not danish and not bosnian... I even thought in english!

Peace and blessings be upon you and may Allah The Almighty guide us all :D

2 speak without an accent, U know, without soundin' like u're from DK...

-Do you use english other places than school? If yes, where?

With friends. I have few friends from UK and Canada. Also on MSN... Some things just sound better in English.

-How much english do you use daily ?

A lot!

PS.: Don't mean 2 be a party-pooper but English is spelled with a big E. As well as Danish, and so on...

Salam Aleikum..

Wow lots of good replies here. So nice to see all those different ways to learn English. We Shirwa learning through Skype, which many people actually does; it´s very nice.

Then we got Soldier Of Allah, whom learned English by singing and watching soap-operas :haha: It´s awesome, though.

Deen whos using his English speaking when he communicates with his relatives from different corners in the world, and by using the famous voice-chat program called "Paltalk".
-And also Nur by communication through MSN Messenger.

It´s awesome huh ? I guess there are so many different ways, that even if you don´t like the English classes, you´d always have a 2nd or 3rd solution :)

Btw. Thanks a lot for the reminder, Nur !

Don't mean to bust your bubble (hilarious expression) :d, but my brother lives in the next room, not in a different part of the world. I talk with friends from other countries.

English is a worldwide language, but the experts say that Chinese will take its place in the near future. I say Arabic will take Chinese place :D

Oh well, as long as your communication is through the internet, I guess it is a whole different place in the world; I mean... Yeah ? isn´t it? Just agree with me, and we be cool :haha: .

Yeah i´ve heard that actually, but again what would that change ? I mean, I don´t think(hope) they will start to teach Chinese at primary schools, even though it could be pretty cool.

About the stats saying that Chinese will take the first place, I think it will change back to English in a matter of time. I use skype a lot, and many Chinese people actually calls me up , and wants to have a conversation on English to improve their skills. So I guess Skype will save it :P

That's true. But China is on its way to be a superpower. Let's just hope they wont take advantage of their position and oppress the rest of the world as The United States did.

Anyway, I believe that the Ummah will be an even bigger superpower, like a great-grand-huge-giant-big-super-duber-power :D

Wa Alaykumu Assalam

Well, I don't communicate with my brother over the internet. I mean, the wall isn't very thick and he can even hear me typing on the keyboard :) So I just talk to him

But if were not talkning about me talking with my (biological) brother then I use the internet. So I agree with you. Hey, actually I do communicate with relatives from different parts of the world. Sometimes I E-mail my cousin in Slovenia, so I guess you were also right before :D

I think Chinese is a very interesting language. But too complicated and their culture is soo complex because their "cultural-revolution".
Although I am happy that I don't have Chinese on my schedule.

It probably will :) But once it turn to Arabic, it wont turn back to either English or Chinese :D

Talking - writing - reading, its a combination of all three.
İ like speaking English. İt's my favourite subject. Mostly because İ actually like the language more than Danish to be honest. I have some friends in England and The US whom I speak with on daily basis, though it's just online friends.

Ps. İ don't know if im the only one who thinks this, but it annoys me when people dont type correctly. İs it that hard to write 'and' instead of 'n', 'are' ınstead of 'r' etc etc. LOL! Anyway these keyboards in Turkey are very much so annoying haha random.

Salam Aleikum

Its pretty funny actually. The use of Internet-Communication have actually helped lots of people with learning English, and especially the writing part. The speaking part is still a bit new; even though we have the great abillity by using the voicechat program "Skype". People from all around the world, are communication with other English speaking people with skype , and in that way they get to practise in a funny and effective way.

About the shortcuts/slang words like "R" "u" and stuff, it is pretty annoying but very used for people who use English to talk with their friends over the internet, because you don't get to think of writing 100% grammatic correctly. But I guess it's okey :)

Peace

Aleykum al salaam :).

I used to reaaally SUCK when it came to English. I didn't like my first English teachers (only my last ones from my 2 last years of secondary school and the teachers I had in my gymnasium years) 'cuz I felt like they were favouring specific pupils over other pupils...not nice. Besides that, I didn't know or understand the English grammar at all, plus I had an extremely poor vocabulary...I literally had to look up every 2nd or 3rd word in the dictionary. The only thing I was really good at was spelling and writing...it's always been a strength of mine that I can look at a word once or twice and remember how it's spelled forever :). However...THAT didn't really make me verbally good in English . Up until the age of...probably 13-14, I didn't really know English that much. Then I somehow got really determined to learn that damn language...I started buying English magazines...asked my father about words I didn't understand rather than bore myself with the dictionary...I watched a lot of MTV...sitcoms and such. and that's how I slowly (well...not THAT slowly ) learned English. I also got THE best teacher at that point; she was extremely sweet and clever, Mashallah - I'll always remember her and be appreciative of how she always wanted me to keep getting better and better. She lend only me some of her private books to read at home...we kind of even planned the English classes together 'cuz she felt like she could trust me, and through me find out how to make her classes interesting and appealing for everyone. Same in gymnasium...I had extremely sweet and well-educated teachers who actually cared for their students. I love it when teachers are THAT dedicated :).

So yeah, how I learned English the best way was with amazing teachers, practice, determination and the WILL and MOTIVATION to learn :). These days I don't go to school anymore...but I use English a lot daily so I'll never ever be able to forget how to speak English :). This is as bad as I get .
